The Gift of Being Present

Hello Canada from Detroit

Hello Canada from Detroit

I have said before, gifts come in many forms and we never know when or from where they will appear, as this past week has proven. It is as if I have been anointed with radiance just from being in the presence of greatness. But, I am sure there is more to the story than that. Yet again, I stop and take a moment to calm myself with breath; I again value this tool which helps me savor the moment.

Sometimes the electric energy of a situation can make the qualities of being calm and present in the moment seem very illusive. Such was the case for me this week-end when I was presented with the opportunity to attend some events at the Women of Color in Technology STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) conference.  Our family was present to support and honor our daughter-in-law as she accepted the top award as Technologist of the Year.  I am still on a high from being in the presence of so many high achieving women. Never, in preparation for this event, did I consider that this would be a life-giving and life-changing experience for me personally.  All of our life experiences contribute to who we are and who we become.  They influence choices we make as much as the choices we make influence the circumstances which come our way.

I think back on my life experience so far, from that country-girl I wrote about last week to the communicator I have become, embodying the courage to stand tall and communicate with confidence. What the ability to be conscious, breathe, and be aware before reacting brings to the table is a feeling of being grounded physically and mentally. These qualities are evident as others observe.  From inside, confidence grows and from the outside, confidence radiates. At the conference as I walked amongst the high achieving women, of all ages, I felt their confidence and was happy to accept that energy as a gift on my own journey.  As I consciously observed, paused, and breathed, for maybe the first time I felt comfortable and at home in my own skin.

Attending this conference was a rather spontaneous decision; it was not in the plan. It pays to listen and adventure forth! Clearly, Breath is the Answer to finding and using my own authentic voice, with resonance, energy, vibrancy, and ease from the inside out.
